Head and neck cancer network

#1 Need

The choice of the treatment protocol for cancers in the head and neck region, in most cases, requires a decision-making process shared by several doctors (surgeon, oncologist, radiotherapist).
The need is to speed up the process and eliminate the physical movements of doctors between geographically distant hospitals.

#2 Idea

We proposed a web-based system that allows the various subjects to collaborate in real time, keeping the history of what was decided and re-propose the various options in further cases.

#3 Technology

We have designed and then developed a web platform based on the Django framework, which guarantees the best data security performance. The frontend was instead implemented in angular to guarantee a user experience similar to a desktop application.
The doctors can access the platform, organized by work group, who can also invite other colleagues as observers, so as to perform a knowledge transfer function, always useful in the health sector.

#4 Workflow

The doctor responsible for the patient generates on the platform the clinical picture and asks the other doctors to collaborate, entering all the information in his possession (imaging, laboratory analysis results ...) and his treatment proposals.
The other doctors, once the material has been viewed, can either decide to do in-depth analyzes, then further medical investigations, or proceed with the voting of the treatment protocol they consider most suitable.
At the end of the decision-making process and the actual treatment of the patient, new data and results are entered, so that the information is always available for subsequent follow-up.

#5 Patient

Throughout the process, from taking charge to treatment, from discharge to follow-up, the patient can access the on-line system, using ad hoc credentials, thus always having the information on his case, his own analysis (without having to carry all the medical reports), on health facilities and on the doctors, avoiding a chronic problem of lack of communication between the medical institution and the patient.
